The Dickathlon
Being the competitive SOBs that we are, my buddy Carroll and I have decided to hold a Dickathlon (Think Decathlon but with 2 obnoxious drunks participating instead of real athletes). And, given our relative lack of athletic prowess, we decided to keep the events low-impact. Each of the 10 events will be scored from 0-1000 points. The winner will likely receive a bottle of scotch purchased by the loser.
Results from the 10 Events are as follows:
| Event | Dyas | Carroll |
| Bowling | 450 | 422 |
| Foot Race (Mile & 40-yd dash) | ||
| Basketball | ||
| Softball Home Run Derby | 600 | 650 |
| Racquetball | ||
| Punt, Pass & Kick | ||
| Mini-golf | 422 | 378 |
| Billiards | ||

Mini-golf, 16 September 2008
Setup: Steve and Mike face off in a round of 18 mini-golf holes. Scores are calculated based on a sliding scale between the lowest possible score (18) and the highest possible score based on a 6-stroke maximum per hole (6 * 18 = 108). So, the ultimate range of scores is 18-108 or 90 strokes.
Summary: Dyas and Carroll faced off at Islands in the Sun in Centreville. It was a cool September evening – perfect for a round of golf. After a few practice strokes on the putting green, the competitors faced off in Rock-Paper-Scissors to determine who goes first. Dyas won with paper over rock and opted to let Carroll shoot first. On the front nine, they battled back and forth initially, but Dyas ultimately achieved a 4 stroke advantage (25-29). Carroll stepped up his game on the back nine before Dyas silenced him with the lone hole-in-one on the evening. However, he quickly sacrificed those strokes with the lone 6 on the very next hole. In the end, Dyas and Carroll both shot 27 on the back nine, and Dyas emerged victorious 52-56.
Results:
Dyas: (90-52) / 90 = 42.22% * 1000 = 422pts.
Carroll: (90-56) / 90 = 37.77% * 1000 = 378pts.

Softball Home Run Derby, 24 August 2008
Setup: BJ pitched to both batters for 20 total swings a piece. Each batter had the right to swing or not swing at any pitch thrown to them. For each pitch swung at, it was scored a homerun if it landed on grass in fair territory. Foul balls, misses and balls landing in the infield were scored as outs. Each “homerun” was worth 50pts.
Summary: Following pre-season softball practice, Carroll and Dyas decided there would be no better time to knock out their second Dickathlon event. Joining them on this leg of the journey were BJ, Rachel and a random asian guy wearing a United States Marine Corps hat who happened to be on the field when we got there. Maybe it was the fact the Carroll, BJ and Dyas were drinking beer and shooting pool until midnight the night before, but the asian guy had more energy than anyone else on the field.
Dyas batted first and posted a respectable 12 homeruns for 600pts. Carroll took the plate, and after 10 swings had hit 6 homeruns, on pace to tie Dyas’s 12-20. But in the end, Carroll went 7-10 in his last 10 swings to edge Dyas out by one with 13 homeruns for 650pts. BJ went on to post a 14-20, which is why he’s not allowed in the Dickathlon. Special thanks to BJ for pitching and Rachel for keeping score.
Results:
Dyas: 12-20 = 600pts.
Carroll: 13-20 = 650pts.
Bowling, 20 August 2008
Setup: Each player bowls 3 games. Each person’s lowest score is dropped, and the remaining 2 are averaged together. The resulting average is plotted on a scale from 0-1000.
Summary: Dyas and Carroll faced off at the good ole Centreville AMC. Also in attendance were Buddha, Melissa and Lauren. Carroll put his bowling league skills to work and came out strong in game 1 with a 140. Dyas battled back in Game 2, bowling a 153 with a Turkey! Game 3 was close throughout and was actually tied after 5 frames. In the end, Dyas edged out Carroll by a narrow margin. Balls were rolled, beer was drank, fun was had. The Dickathlon is officially underway, and it’s anybody’s ball game at this point
Results:
Dyas: 113, 153, 117 – 135 Average = 450pts.
Carroll: 140, 110, 113 – 126.5 Average = 422pts.
