Steve Dyas’s Profile

Steve Dyas hails from Centreville, VA. However, he developed his competitive hunger growing up in Northern New Jersey where he excelled in baseball, basketball and TV tag. As a kid he became an avid Duke Basketball fan during the days of Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill. His parents instilled a deep proclivity for the New York Mets which he promptly disavowed in favor of the Washington Nationals upon moving to the Washington DC area – a decision his parents make him frequently regret given the recent success of the Mets and the dark cloud that consistently hovers above Nationals Park.

While attending Penn State University, Steve became a skilled racquetball player, and at the same time seemed to balloon in weight to the tune of 250 lbs. I’m sure overly convenient access to beer, pizza, wings and breakfast sandwiches had nothing to do with it. These days, Steve has slimmed down to a respectable 180 lbs. and focuses his energy on choosing the right foods and exercising regularly. At times, he competes in regional racquetball tournaments and also plays softball and volleyball with a team of friends who have named themselves the Ruckers.

Steve has a competitive edge that just won’t quit. However, he values sportsmanship and the beauty of a fair fight above all. That is what makes this Decathlon such a beautiful thing. Steve has the utmost respect for his opponent, Mike Carroll, but will do everything within his power (and within the rules) to defeat him. Win or lose, Steve plans to enjoy all of the ten events and cannot wait to celebrate the conclusion over a few cold beers and a few glasses of scotch purchased by the loser.

“Keep your eye on the ball, and follow through.” (It applies to just about everything)

“No lead is large enough to let your guard down.”

“Forget the pain now. If it really hurts, it will still be there tomorrow.”
